The following terms and conditions are related to any new bookings made when date of play is after 31st March 2026.
Bookings
It should be noted that groups of less than four may be joined to make a four ball.
Caddies
If you request the services of a caddie please note that this is not included in the price of your green-fee, caddies are self-employed and should be paid cash-in-hand on completion of your round. The caddie fee is £80, plus gratuity. It is strongly recommended that caddies are booked no later than 24 hours in advance. Every endeavour will be made to provide caddies that are requested on the date of play, but this cannot be guaranteed.
Confirmed Tee Times
Once payment is made a Booking Confirmation will be sent. This must be presented to the Starter at time of play.
Dress
We ask that players wear appropriate golf attire whilst on the course. No football or rugby attire permitted.
Duration of Round
At Carnoustie Golf Links we are committed to a pace of play as indicated on your scorecards, which will ensure that everyone enjoys playing the course in a reasonable time. You can help us achieve this by playing from the tees that suit your ability and always being ready to play when it is your turn. We have our Course Marshals on the course to offer assistance and maintain pace of play. Please, as a courtesy to all golfers, do whatever is necessary to maintain your place on the course and keep up with the group in front of you. In the event of persistent slow play a Course Marshal may ask you to pick up your ball and move to the next hole or in severe cases remove you from the course if you are deemed to be repeatedly delaying other golfers.
Handicap Limits
Carnoustie Golf Links, recommends a maximum handicap of 28 or less for men and 36 or less for women. The same recommendation applies for Juniors and Juveniles. You can find our course handicap tables here.
Bad Weather
Lightning
The safety of all golfers on our courses is of the utmost importance. In the event of lightning in the area, players already on the course are strongly advised to stop play immediately and seek shelter in the nearest shelter or building. Once the lightning has passed and it is safe to do so, players may return to their position on the course to complete their round. However, if a green fee-paying visitor chooses to abandon their round instead of waiting for the weather to clear, no refund will be provided.
Players due to tee off will be informed of any lightning activity in the area, either evident or expected. It remains the golfer’s decision whether to proceed with their round. If a tee time is missed due to lightning concerns, we will do our best to rearrange the round later that day or the following day, subject to availability. If a reschedule is not possible, a full refund will be issued.
For organised events, the decision to suspend or abandon play rests with the event organiser. For tournaments managed by Carnoustie Golf Links, that responsibility lies with the designated Links staff.
Fog or Haar
Fog and haar are naturally occurring conditions on the Links and can vary quickly. When fog is present during play, the decision to continue or stop rests with the individual golfer, as visibility can change from minute to minute.
For those due to start their round, our starter will advise on current visibility conditions. If golfers choose not to begin their round, we will make every effort to reschedule for later that day or the following day, subject to availability. If rescheduling is not possible, a refund will be provided.
However, if golfers choose to begin their round and later decide not to complete all 18 holes due to fog, no refund will be offered.
In the case of organised events, the decision to pause or cancel play lies with the event organiser. For tournaments managed by Carnoustie Golf Links, that responsibility lies with the designated Links staff.
Heavy Rain
Before Your Round – 1st Tee
If heavy rain causes a temporary suspension of play before your tee time, start-times may be delayed by up to one hour. This allows our team to relocate hole positions and remove surface water from greens to ensure playability.
If the course reopens within one hour of the initial suspension, play will resume in the original start-time order. Our starter will make every effort to reduce delays to tee times scheduled later in the day.
During Your Round – on the Course
When heavy rain is forecast, we take preventative measures, such as moving hole locations to higher ground. If conditions still make it impossible to putt out, the course will be temporarily closed and play suspended. Golfers on the course should take shelter until the weather improves.
Once it is safe to do so, play will resume from the point at which it was suspended. If golfers choose to abandon their round instead of waiting for the rain to clear, no refund will be given.
Tee Time Rescheduling and Refunds
If the 1st tee remains closed for more than one hour, play will resume with the group whose original tee time was exactly one hour ahead of the reopening time. For example:
In the case of organised events, the decision to pause or cancel play lies with the event organiser. For tournaments managed by Carnoustie Golf Links, that responsibility lies with the designated Links staff.
Frost
Frost presents a significant risk to the health of our greens, especially during periods of high winter play. Foot traffic on frozen turf can cause lasting damage to the grass plant, increasing its vulnerability to disease and affecting overall course quality.
To protect our playing surfaces, the following measures are in place:
Refunds
Prepaid green fees and/or deposits are non-refundable and non-transferrable after a 7 day cooling off period from the day payment is made unless the agreed booking is unreasonably moved or cancelled by Carnoustie Golf Links. Any reduction in numbers means the loss of the same deposit/full green fee.
VAT
Companies or organisations wishing to book on behalf of other parties may be liable to VAT.
Winter Rounds
The Winter period is regarded as play between November 1st and March 31st however that may be adjusted. During this period mats are to be used by all golfers to protect the fairways during the non growing season. Mats will be provided for your round. The courses may well be shortened and/or adjusted in the order of play. If ground conditions merit it Winter greens will be used.
Liability and Insurance
Carnoustie Golf Links (CGL) takes reasonable steps to design, maintain, and operate the course safely and in line with industry best practices. As such, we are not legally liable for injuries or damage caused by wayward golf balls unless proven negligence in our management or design can be demonstrated. Golfers are individually responsible for their actions on the course and are expected to: play with due care and attention, observe all course etiquette and local rules, accept personal responsibility for any damage or injury caused. If required, we hold third party insurance for golfers, however, we recommend all golfers carry their own personal liability insurance, either independently or through golf affiliation bodies. If a golfer strikes a person or property they are expected to: stop play and immediately, offer assistance, exchange contact details with the affected person (if appropriate), notify a member of the Carnoustie Golf Links team or report to the Guest Relations Team within Links House, take photos of the damage if safe and appropriate, be honest – accidents happen, and cooperation is valued.
